Steffi McKeown: What’s your career plan?

Meet Steffi McKeown, Senior Adviser at TwentyTwo. Steffi joined the TwentyTwo tribe in 2018 with four years’ hands-on experience in the commercial property market. She provides tenants/occupiers with advice on needs analysis/briefing, stay-go decisions, new leases, lease renewals, rent reviews, portfolio management and the various issues associated with managing large occupier portfolios. Emma Barker asks Steffi about her career journey to TwentyTwo and what comes next…

What drew you into property/consulting?

At 22, I decided that living in a regional centre was a little quiet. Most of my friends were living in Auckland so I decided to move there. I got a job as Marketing Assistant to an office leasing team and then EA to a head of department at a property company. It went from there!

What do you love about it?

No two days are the same! We deal with different people/clients every day, each with their own unique problems for us to solve. We’re faced with interesting challenges and when you see the finished product, it’s pretty rewarding.
Because no two days are the same, it can be challenging having to work through things I’ve never done before by applying my knowledge/working out a solution. Sometimes this goes beyond property and, while challenging, it also makes work exciting.

Where did your career journey begin?

In 2012, I graduated from Victoria University with a Bachelor of Arts in Geography and Anthropology with Honours in Anthropology. After this, my first job was as a receptionist at the Planning and Funding department at a DHB.

When did you join the TwentyTwo Tribe?

I’ve been with TwentyTwo for four years.

What’s your next career step from here? What are you working towards?

I’m now taking a bit of a hiatus from consulting to start my next role as a mum… although I’m sure that won’t be any less challenging!
