Procurement solution fuels major step towards biodiesel in NZ

Z Energy’s customers in Auckland, Waikato and the Bay of Plenty will soon be able to fill their tanks with ‘Z Bio D’ – a sustainable diesel which will be manufactured at its new bio-fuel production plant in South Auckland. We’re delighted to have been involved in helping Z Energy procure a suitable site for their investment.

Our initial site search began in 2012 and was focused on South Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga. However, while the required facility was in many respects a standard industrial premise with warehouse, yard and office space, the nature of the plant introduced a range of special requirements for the site and the neighbourhood in which it was located.

After an extensive canvass of the market, we identified just one existing site suitable for redevelopment to meet Z Energy’s requirements and that was in South Auckland. A decision was taken to pursue a design build solution and the site in Wiri was successfully secured under a Development Agreement with Direct Property. Z Energy is currently in the commissioning phase of the plant after more than four years of planning, design and build.

Bio-fuel manufacturing is a significant investment for Z Energy and is its biggest step yet to help customers reduce carbon emissions. Biodiesel is commonly used in Europe and other countries but is relatively new for New Zealand – making this a significant accomplishment for Z Energy. We’re proud to have contributed.
